How Lazada's Free Shipping Max programme works for sellers
Free Shipping Max is a Lazada programme where your products can show a free shipping badge to shoppers, even when the buyer’s order is below the normal free shipping threshold. You opt in, and in return you accept a programme fee that helps cover the shipping subsidy. The shipping does not become free to the system. Someone pays for it, and the main question for a seller is whether that someone is you.
I’m writing this because the same question keeps coming up in seller communities, including the Lazada Philippines community: who funds it, how do I join, and what does it cost? I’ll answer those three directly below. One caveat up front. Lazada changes programme terms, fee rates and eligibility by country and by campaign period. I don’t quote percentages here because I would rather you read the live number in your own Seller Center than trust a figure that may be out of date. Where something changes, I’ve dated it as of October 2026.
What it is
Free Shipping Max is an opt-in shipping subsidy programme run by Lazada. A seller enrols eligible products or the whole store. Shoppers then see a free shipping label on those listings, usually with a lower minimum spend than the standard free shipping voucher.
Three things to keep in mind:
- it is opt-in: Lazada does not enrol you automatically, and you can generally review your enrolment in Seller Center
- it is a fee-based programme: you pay for the benefit, normally as an extra charge on completed orders, not as an upfront subscription
- it is a marketplace programme, not a courier service: it changes who pays the shipping subsidy, not how the parcel physically moves
If you have used Shopee, the closest comparison is Shopee’s own free shipping programme. The mechanics differ, but the idea is the same. The marketplace offers shoppers a free shipping promise and charges sellers a programme fee to fund it.
How it works
Here is the mechanism in plain steps.
Who funds it
Shipping has a real cost. A courier charges Lazada’s logistics arm for each parcel, and that cost depends on weight, size and destination. When a shopper sees free shipping, the shipping fee they would normally pay is covered by another source. In Free Shipping Max, that source is shared between Lazada and the participating sellers.
In practice, the seller’s share shows up as a programme fee deducted from the order’s payout, alongside the usual commission and payment fee. Lazada covers the rest of the subsidy. The exact split, the fee rate, and whether there is a cap per order differ by market and can change between campaigns. Treat any figure from a blog or video, including mine, as a prompt to go and check your own dashboard.
How to join
The steps are broadly the same across Lazada markets, although menu names change:
- log in to Seller Center for your country, for example Lazada Seller Center Philippines
- look under the marketing or promotions area for the Free Shipping Max entry, or the programme banner on your dashboard
- read the programme terms, which state the fee rate, any cap, and any eligibility rules
- opt in at store level or product level, depending on what the page offers for your account
- check one or two live listings on the Lazada app to confirm the badge appears
Eligibility usually looks at things like store performance, shipping speed and cancellation rate. If you don’t see the option, that is often the reason, and the programme page normally says what you need to meet. It can take some time after opting in for the badge to appear on listings.
What it costs
There are really three costs, and sellers often only count the first one.
- the programme fee: a deduction from each completed order that carries the Free Shipping Max benefit
- the margin you give up if you keep your selling price unchanged: the fee comes out of the same money that covers your product cost, packaging and commission
- the shipping you still owe if you ship under a different fulfilment model: for example, if you handle returns or failed deliveries, those costs don’t disappear
Here is a simple way to think about it. Work out your profit on one typical order before the programme. Subtract the programme fee as shown in your Seller Center terms. If what is left is still a margin you can live with, the programme is worth testing. If not, either raise the price slightly or skip it for that product. I’m not going to give you an example with made-up numbers, because it would only work for a margin that isn’t yours.
How the fee interacts with other charges, such as commission, can be less obvious. If you sell in the Philippines, my article on commission fee exceptions Philippine Lazada sellers should know covers why not every fee line applies to every category.
Why it matters
I treat Free Shipping Max as a conversion tool, not a growth hack. Here are the situations where it makes sense.
- shoppers filter on it: many buyers on Lazada compare prices including shipping. A listing with the free shipping label avoids the surprise at checkout, which is where a lot of carts get abandoned
- it helps lower-priced items: when shipping is a large share of the final price, free shipping changes how the total looks next to a competitor’s
- it can rescue a store with traffic but few orders: if people click through and leave, shipping cost at the cart is one of several reasons. I go through the others in why a Lazada store gets visitors but no orders
- it fits sellers with predictable parcel sizes: if your products are light and consistent, the shipping subsidy is easier to price in than for bulky or variable items
None of this guarantees more sales. I can’t tell you what the programme will do for your orders, and I’d distrust anyone who claims to.
Common misconceptions
“Free shipping means Lazada pays for everything”
No. Lazada funds part of the subsidy, and the seller funds part through the programme fee. The label is free to the buyer, not to the seller. Read the terms for your market before you assume otherwise.
“Joining is automatic once my store is active”
Not as a rule. It is an opt-in programme, and some sellers don’t qualify at first because of store metrics. If you can’t find it, check the eligibility notes on the programme page, and look at your fulfilment performance before you assume something is broken.
“It replaces fulfilment decisions”
It does not. Free Shipping Max is about who pays the shipping subsidy. How the item gets from you to the buyer is a separate choice between shipping it yourself, using Lazada’s fulfilment, or using another route. If you’re comparing those, my piece on fulfilment options for Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop lays out the differences.
“Once I opt in, I’m stuck”
Programme terms vary, but sellers generally can review or change enrolment in Seller Center. Check the exit rules on the terms page before you join, and note the date you enrolled so you can compare order volume and margin before and after.
Where to go from here
If this was your first look at the programme, these are the next things I’d read, in this order.
- my blog index has the rest of the Lazada and marketplace explainers in one place
- fulfilment options for Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop if you want to understand how shipping choices change your costs
- why a Lazada store gets visitors but no orders if your problem is conversion, not shipping
- what LazMall is and what brands need to join if you are a brand weighing a different Lazada channel
One last practical point on tax. Programme fees reduce what you receive from Lazada, and how you record them depends on your country and business structure. If you’re a Singapore seller, start with the IRAS GST page and my GST basics for Singapore marketplace sellers. This is not legal or tax advice, so check with an accountant for your own case.
I’m not affiliated with Lazada, Shopee or TikTok Shop. I’m a Singapore-based operator writing from my own experience of how these programmes are set up, and anything I couldn’t confirm I’ve told you to check on the platform itself.
